What's the biggest mistake artists make with their websites?

Artists turn their websites into artistic compositions themselves, adding fonts, slideshows, walls of text, sometimes music, and other distracting elements. This completely misses the point. Art websites should mimic the art gallery experience — minimalist design, monochromatic backgrounds, artwork front and center, well-lit, with little else to distract. The paradigm for how art is viewed and sold worldwide is either in museums or galleries, which all share these same characteristics. Your website visitors need to immediately understand they’re there to view and purchase art. Keep it simple: feature the art prominently, make it easy to visualize on a wall, show clear prices and purchasing options.
