How do I create work that will sell rather than just creating what I want?
Think about reverse engineering attention. Start with a massive audience in mind, then create work for that audience. Identify groups that are already passionate and engaged, then create work that resonates with them. The strategy becomes even more powerful when that audience is highly charged up about something timely—like a sports championship or cultural moment. However, only choose subjects you’re genuinely passionate about. There are many large audiences you could target, but it’s much harder to execute well if you don’t personally care about the subject. The sweet spot is finding the overlap between what you care about and what a large, engaged audience wants.
