What's the right social media strategy for artists who are good in person but struggle online?
Think about how you act at a gallery opening—that’s your social media strategy. At an opening, there’s wine, cheese, music, other patrons, and the gallerist. When someone walks in, you have a conversation about your life: where you’re from, whether you’re married, if you have kids, what you do in your spare time. Then you naturally talk about the art. That’s exactly what your social media should be—real conversations, personal sharing, life updates, and then your art woven in naturally. What do most artists do instead? They post art, art, art, art, more art, pictures of their process, art, art, art. You would never do that at an in-person event! You’d have normal, engaging conversations. Do the same thing online. Be a real person first, an artist second, and you’ll see much better engagement and connection with your audience.
