Is the traditional gallery system still a viable path for artists?
The traditional gallery paradigm is largely over. Research shows that the percentage of artists making over six figures a year through galleries—after all fees—is minuscule, like a tenth of a percent. It’s comparable to the ratio of people who play sports versus those who become professional athletes. Even galleries now ask artists: What’s your website? What size is your social media following? Do you have an email list? If you have those things, they’ll take you. If you don’t, they won’t work that hard. The galleries that haven’t closed want artists who’ve already built their own audience. The old model of being discovered and launched by a gallery is a fairy tale—it just doesn’t happen for the vast majority of artists.
