I get very nervous and choke up when trying to talk about my art on video. How can I get more comfortable sharing my story?
Start by having someone interview you — like a family member or friend who makes you comfortable. Have them ask you questions to get you started, then edit out their parts so it’s just you talking. Put the camera somewhere you can forget about it and just have a natural conversation. You’re not supposed to be great at it at first — it’s supposed to be painful and difficult, like going to the gym. But each time gets a little easier. The key is to stop thinking about the camera and just talk naturally, as you would at a gallery opening. People might even connect with your nervousness and authenticity — that vulnerability can be exactly what makes them like you. Don’t wait to be perfect; just start, even if it’s uncomfortable.
