How do I get people to actually purchase when they compliment my art?
Turn buying questions into selling conversations. When someone says ‘You’re so talented’ or ‘You should sell these’ or ‘What beautiful work,’ respond with: ‘Thank you so much for that feedback. Just to let you know, this work is for sale,’ then quote the price, and then shut up. Just stop talking. You’ll immediately find out if they’re just being nice or if they actually want to buy. If they engage after that, you’re in a negotiation and you have something real. You can do this in social media comments, in email replies, when family visits, at shows—anywhere. And if they say they’re not in the market, follow up with curiosity: ‘What’s the last piece of art you bought? Why did you buy it? What kind of art motivates you?’ Have those conversations. People will tell you what they actually want.
