Should I follow art trends, or is comparing my work to others harmful?
Trying to chase trends or constantly comparing your art to others is generally poison for your business. There are so many individual variables that go into making a successful artist that trying to succeed through comparison is a fool’s errand. Questions like ‘what are the best-selling sizes’ or ‘what subject matter is hot right now’ might give you ideas, but they’re not a wise path to success. Instead, do you—create what inspires you and be yourself. Then get feedback from real people by actually showing your work and marketing it. Be open to what the market tells you through purchases and requests. Put a commissions button on your website—when people say ‘I love your creative eye, will you create this for me,’ that’s valuable feedback. Shorten the feedback loop rather than working in isolation for months, but don’t let trends or comparisons dictate your creative direction.
