What's the right way to think about an art website?
Your website should mimic the art gallery experience online. Think about how art is viewed and sold universally: in museums and galleries with minimalist design, monochromatic walls (usually white), art beautifully displayed and well-lit, no distractions, clear information, and prices. Your website needs to follow this same paradigm. The problem is that artists’ creative gifting gets in the way—they treat the website like a blank canvas. They add goofy fonts, color changes, giant slideshows, walls of text, and so much visual noise that it would be a miracle if anyone knew there was art for sale. Keep your website minimalist with no distractions. Clearly communicate that visitors are there to view and purchase art. Follow the established paradigm and people will understand instinctively what they’re looking at.
