Do I need to find a niche to be successful as an artist or photographer?

No. The conventional wisdom that you absolutely need a niche to be successful is largely false. There are more successful artists with absolutely no niche whatsoever than those with a narrow niche. People aren’t buying just because you paint a certain way or photograph a specific subject. They’re buying because they like you as a person and your creative eye. Once they’re invested in you, they’ll often buy whatever you create. There are even cases where an artist’s initial body of work doesn’t sell well, they pivot to something different that takes off, and then 2-3 years later the old work that couldn’t sell suddenly starts selling — because now people are invested in the artist and trust their creative vision regardless of subject matter. Focus on being yourself and letting people connect with you, rather than forcing yourself into a narrow box.
