How should I approach social media marketing as an artist?
Social media is meant to be a conversation, not a one-way broadcast. The biggest mistake artists make is running what can be called the ‘art gatling gun’ — post after post of just artwork, studio shots, and nothing else. Imagine meeting someone at a gallery opening who only talks about their art nonstop — you’d want to leave immediately. Yet that’s what most artists do online. Instead, have real conversations. Share who you are, your story, what you do when you’re not creating, what makes you human. Let people find something in common with you — are you a dog person, do you drink coffee, do you kayak on weekends? People buy from people they know, like, and trust. You can’t build that relationship with just images of artwork. Think of your art as the commercials — you need to create some programming (your personality and story) to keep people engaged.
