Am I owed a successful business just because I create art that inspires me?
No, the market does not owe you a living for your self-expression. Just because you created something that inspired you and showed it to the world does not mean you automatically deserve a thriving business. This is a critical distinction between being a hobbyist and running a business. As a hobbyist, you’re unconstrained — create whatever you want, answer to nobody, and there’s no shame in that. But if you want a business, there’s one valid definition: to create a customer. As Peter Drucker wrote in 1954, the purpose of business is to create a customer through marketing and innovation. In a business, the customer gets a vote. You don’t get the final say — the market does.
