Where did the idea that discounting cheapens art come from?

The belief that discounting cheapens your art likely originated from gallery owners who didn’t want artists selling their own work in the first place. It’s a piece of advice that has been passed down without examination—people taking it as truth from authorities who never examined the question themselves and whose opinions aren’t supported by actual sales data. When you look at the numbers, artists who hold firmly to this belief are consistently the ones selling the least amount of work.
