What should I post on social media besides my artwork?
Post about who you are as a person. Where did you grow up? Do you have siblings? Pets? Are you a coffee or tea person? What do you do when you’re not creating art? Why do you love what you create—who got you into it? Was it a parent? A teacher? What’s your favorite meal to cook? What hobbies do you have? The goal is to give people an opportunity to find things in common with you and to get to know, like, and trust you. Think of it this way: when you post something that’s not about your art, you’re giving the algorithm more places to put your content. If you only post waterfalls, the algorithm only shows your posts to people who like waterfalls. But if you post about your dog, now it can show that to dog lovers. If you post about hiking, it reaches hikers. Every interest you share opens up a new ‘lane’ for the algorithm to deliver your content. And every single one of us—no matter how mundane we think our life is—has a tribe out there that thinks the same way we do, finds the same things funny, and shares similar interests. Social media algorithms are sophisticated enough now to find that tribe for you, but only if you give them content beyond just your art.
