What happened to artists who only sold through galleries and in-person shows during the pandemic?

Their sales went to zero almost instantly. When galleries and art shows shut down, artists with purely indirect businesses had no way to generate revenue—the light switch was flipped off and there was nothing they could do about it. This is an extreme but clear example of why relying solely on channels you don’t control is so dangerous: external events can wipe out your entire income stream with no recourse.
