What does 'building a direct business' actually mean, and why is it so important?

Building a direct business means you own the customer relationships and sell through channels you control—primarily your own website where customers pay you directly. You own the email addresses, you control the marketing, you set the prices, and no third party can change the rules on you. This is how you get consistent, predictable income. It’s how businesses in every other industry operate: they have their own storefront (physical or digital), they market directly to customers, and they build a database of repeat buyers. In contrast, selling only through galleries, marketplaces, or social media platforms means you’re dependent on intermediaries who take large cuts, own the customer relationship, and can change their terms or algorithms at any time. A direct business is your foundation—‘building your house on rock.’ You can supplement with other channels, but your direct channel must be the core that you invest in and grow consistently.
