How should I approach marketing my art on social media?
Stop running what I call the ‘Art Gatling Gun’—constantly posting nothing but your art, art on walls, art reveals, art carousels, and talking about being an artist. If you met someone at a gallery opening and just shouted ‘I’m an artist! Buy my art! Art! Art! Art!’ non-stop, they’d think you’d lost your mind. Yet that’s exactly what most artists do on social media. Your art is the commercials. No one tunes into a channel that just shows commercials. You need to create ‘programming’—content that entertains, makes people laugh, shows your personality, gives them something to know, like, and trust. Human beings are wired to make purchasing decisions from people they know, like, and trust, and it’s very hard to build that relationship with just a JPEG or a video of you holding art.
