I have a marketing background but don't understand social media marketing. How do I learn to market myself online when that wasn't part of my traditional marketing education?

Even with an MBA in marketing from before the social media era, you already understand the fundamentals—marketing is about the arbitrage of attention. The principles haven’t changed; the platforms have. You need to go where the fish are, and today that’s the top websites: Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram. The key is understanding that social media marketing is about building know-like-trust relationships by sharing who you are as a person, not just posting your work. Yes, there’s SEO and algorithms to learn, but the core concept is consistency and showing up on the platforms where billions of people spend their time on their phones. Focus on learning the platforms and committing to consistency rather than getting overwhelmed by technical acronyms.
