Should I worry about current market trends and whether art is a luxury purchase?

No, nothing has fundamentally changed about the art business. Don’t get caught up in crystal ball questions like ‘what are the best-selling media types?’ or ‘what price points work best?’ or ‘what niches are hot right now?’ These are folly. The art business is such a multivariate equation involving who the artist is, their season of life, their personality, their marketing ability, and what they’re actually creating, that you can’t worry about how anyone else does their thing. You have a product, and if the world likes it, it sells. To a certain extent you can optimize, but the most important thing is to just do you, get feedback along the way, and let that feedback steer where you go. Don’t keep creating in isolation with assumptions about what will or won’t work—get your work out there and see what actually happens. The feedback is what matters, not the trends.
