How consistent do I need to be with my marketing efforts?

If you want a business rather than a hobby, you need to market with the same consistency as if you owned a physical art gallery. That means keeping the doors open 5-6 days a week, not walking up, deciding you’re burnt out, and closing for three months. This is a proxy for your marketing consistency. Getting inspired to do marketing hard for a week or two, then going dark for days, weeks, months, or a year is why your business isn’t going anywhere. You need to be outbound marketing consistently. If you want a business that brings in revenue, you have to take this aspect seriously and keep the gallery doors open through consistent marketing.
