What mistakes do artists make when communicating with potential giveaway partners?
The biggest mistake is being a pain to work with. Nobody wants to do business with someone who’s difficult. These people have large communities because they’re good at what they do, which means they’re busy. Don’t send long diatribes about yourself and your background when they express interest. Don’t make everything complicated. Your job is to make it as easy as possible for them to say yes—to be an energy-up, enjoyable person to interact with. The creative brain isn’t always wired for business, and artists often become their own worst enemy in negotiations by overthinking or over-explaining. Keep it simple and make their lives easy.
