What is the single most important factor that determines success for artists and photographers in their business?

Consistency is the absolute key to success. If you stay consistent in your efforts and never quit, you will make it. This applies equally to everyone regardless of where they are in their journey — whether they’ve never sold anything, have only sold a few pieces, are trying to go full-time, or are already selling tens of thousands of dollars a year. It doesn’t matter how many hours you can dedicate each week — some people have one or two hours, others have ten or thirty. What matters is that you stay at it consistently without ever stopping. Keep making forward progress and you will win. Your business will continue to grow. The majority of artists never stay consistent, so the small percentage that do are the ones who succeed.
