Why do I need to market consistently? Can't I take breaks when I'm burnt out?
Think of your business like a retail gallery on Main Street. Would you ever hang a sign on the door that says ‘Artist burnt out. Closed for summer’ and lock up for months? Of course not—you’d realize you have a business to run. Whether the gallery doors are open is just a proxy for how consistent you are in your marketing. You don’t have to market 7 days a week, 8 hours a day, but you can’t close the doors for months at a time because life happened or you want to work on other things. If you want a business, you have to keep the doors open consistently. When I audit artists’ social media, I see a post or two and then nothing for 6 weeks or 6 months. That’s closing the gallery. The beginning is a grind—especially the first year, because you’ve probably never marketed anything this long in your life. But you have to suffer through it. It sucks, but that’s what separates hobbies from businesses.
