What are the actual basics I need to do to have a real art business versus just a hobby?

There are talented artists who are hobbyists, and there are talented artists running businesses—the difference is doing the basics consistently. Here’s what that means: You need your art on a website. You need to capture email addresses from interested visitors. You need to run sales and marketing campaigns. You need to email those addresses regularly. You need to post on social media consistently. And you need to do all of this consistently, all year long, without stopping for months at a time. If you do these basics, you have a business that’s going places. It’s not a secret formula or some magical technique—it’s simply doing the work you don’t want to do for a prolonged period of time. Once you’re over that hump, the business gains momentum and starts working for you.
