I have two very different bodies of work—abstract art and documentary photography. Should I worry about having a consistent niche?

Don’t worry about it. You as the artist are the brand just as much as the work itself. More artists don’t have a defined niche than do. Here’s what’s important: you don’t get to decide your niche—the market does. Take both bodies of work to market, start marketing, get attention and feedback, see what people comment on and purchase. One of two things will happen: either the work sells consistently across the board and you don’t have a niche (you’re just the artist’s name), or Pareto’s Law emerges—the 80-20 rule. If 80% of your revenue comes from 20% of the work, then you have a niche. Let the market tell you through actual sales data, not your own assumptions.
