What time horizon should I have when thinking about my art business?
Don’t look at your art business with a one-year time horizon—you need to think in terms of 3 to 5 years minimum, and really, much longer. This is not a get-rich-quick endeavor. Like every other artist who’s ever been successful, it’s going to take a couple years of suffering—and that’s just the reality of learning how to market yourself and build a business. But once you do learn those skills, you have a business that’s growing. Artists who stick with it for 3-4 years often suddenly see everything click and get very busy, even after years of struggle. You’re going to be creating for the rest of your life anyway, so commit to building the business side with the same long-term perspective. If you only have a one-year mental commitment, don’t start—you need to write yourself a 3-5 year mental check, knowing you’ll be learning and growing the whole time.
