How do I balance being vulnerable in my art with concerns about how people will react?

Don’t censor yourself based on what you think people will want or how they might react. The more authentic and vulnerable you are in creating your work, the more it will resonate with the right audience. If you’re thinking ‘what are people going to think when I create this?’ you’re blocking the artistic process from flowing naturally. Create the work that needs to come out of you first. Good artwork often provokes visceral responses - whether positive or negative - and that emotional reaction itself indicates successful art. When you have an idea in your head and feel hesitant about sharing it, those are often the pieces that get the most meaningful response because they’re the most genuine.
