Why is storytelling important when marketing my art?
Storytelling creates context and emotional connection that makes people appreciate and value your art much more. Think of it like watching a video of a kid landing a double backflip on a bike. If you just see the successful landing, you think ‘okay, that’s cool.’ But if you see the whole backstory—the kid practicing 30 times, falling over and over, finally sticking the landing and hugging his dad—you’re incredibly impressed because you appreciate the journey. Just showing your art is like showing only the successful backflip. The backstory—who you are, why you create, what inspired this piece, the challenges you faced—that’s what makes people truly appreciate the work and want to buy it. You can’t just sell the end result without establishing value through the story. Everyone thinks you can sell just the final piece, but you need the backstory to get people to take action.
