What's wrong with relying entirely on art galleries for sales?

The statistics on gallery success are atrocious—less than one-tenth of one percent (0.5%) of artists in major markets like London and New York make anything resembling a living from gallery sales alone. Everyone else has a supportive spouse or another job. Worse, galleries will never tell you who purchased your work, so you can’t build collector relationships. Since this is a collector-driven business where someone may buy 7+ pieces from you over a lifetime, not knowing your buyers is crippling. Additionally, many galleries now expect artists to bring their own audience—they ask about your email list size and social media following before taking you on, because they’re lazy and want you to do the marketing. Gallery-only is too risky; you need multiple revenue streams.
