Should I surround myself with other people when building my art business, and why does that matter?
There’s a saying that you’re the average of the five closest people you surround yourself with. In your business life, you must answer: who are the five closest experts or successful artists surrounding you? If that number is zero or one, and the closest person is a friend or spouse not in the business giving you advice, you’re basically on your own. Trying to become a marketing expert alone, fighting every battle alone, and going it completely solo is very flawed and usually doesn’t work. The fundamental problems in an art business happen day-to-day and week-to-week based on your specific hurdles related to your art, subject matter, audience, and unique path to success. You need mentors, other professionals who’ve been there before, and experts who can help with your particular challenges rather than wasting time and making mistakes you don’t even know you’re making.
