Do I need to share my personal life on social media to be successful selling art?

You don’t need to become a Kardashian or share every aspect of your life, but people do need to be able to learn something about you as a person beyond just your art. When visitors come to your social media or website and can’t learn anything about you—where you’re from, what you do when you’re not creating, what makes you interesting—you’ve lost them. The algorithm also works against you when you only post art, because it keeps putting you in the same narrow lane, only reaching a tiny group of people interested in that specific subject. When you share other aspects of yourself—like having dogs, your background, your interests—the algorithm puts you in different lanes with much wider reach, and people find common ground to connect with you. Once they connect with you as a person, the way they look at your art completely changes.
