How should my artist website look to be effective at selling?

Your website needs to mimic the art gallery experience. Think about how art is displayed in museums and galleries worldwide: minimalist, monochromatic walls (usually white), the art prominently displayed, maybe a small description, and little else. There’s alchemy in this paradigm—it’s how humans are conditioned to view and purchase art. The problem is that artists are creatives who understand composition and color theory, so they treat their website like a canvas. They add multiple fonts, colors, goofy slideshows, and walls of text. This makes it nearly impossible for visitors to actually see the art or realize it’s for sale. Your website should be minimalist, not distracting, with the art clearly displayed, information about it, prices visible, and an obvious way to purchase.
