Why do artists' businesses stay in the hobby zone and never grow year after year?

The core issue is inconsistency in marketing. Imagine you own a physical gallery on Main Street. You’d open the doors and keep the gallery open 5-6 days a week because you have a lease and a business. But what most artists do is walk in Monday morning, flip the sign to ‘Closed—Artist Burnt Out,’ lock the door, and leave. Whether your gallery is online or offline, you have to keep the doors open. What happens is artists market for a bit, post to social media, maybe send an email, then burn out, get tired, life happens, and they quit. A year later they’re back in the same position—motivated again, starting over, then burning out again. The gallery stays closed for months or a year at a time. You can’t build a business this way. Consistency is the difference between having a business and having a hobby. You owe it to yourself and all the hours you’ve invested in your craft to learn how to market and stay consistent.
