Is the gallery model a viable path to making a living as an artist?

The traditional gallery model has an extremely low success rate—less than one-tenth of one percent of artists in galleries make over six figures annually. It’s comparable to the ratio of people who play sports versus professional athletes who make a living at it. If you can make galleries work, that’s fantastic and you should pursue it, but don’t count on it as your sole path. The more viable approaches are: becoming a ‘road warrior’ doing 15-20 in-person shows per year, building a website and keeping consistent with online marketing, or any combination of these. Never rely on just one channel—diversify your revenue streams.
