Why do I need to share personal stories alongside my art?

When someone experiences your website or marketing and cannot learn anything about YOU, that’s a failure. Think about the Van Gogh example: his work didn’t sell until people could read his letters explaining what was happening in his life, why he painted each piece, where he was mentally and emotionally. The story made the art sellable. In practical terms, art and photography is a collector-driven business. Collectors—people who will buy 7+ pieces over a lifetime—want to know the person behind the work. They want to understand where your artistic eye came from, how you grew up, what hardships you’ve faced, whether you’re funny, vulnerable, relatable. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. Your story creates that connection and transforms viewers into buyers and buyers into collectors. Without the story, you’re just showing commercials with no programming.
