Why do artists struggle to turn their hobby into a real business?

Artists are excellent at creating art but struggle woefully with getting people to see and buy it — it’s a marketing problem. Most artists avoid marketing because they don’t want to do it, but marketing is exactly what separates a hobby from a business. The mistake is making short-term decisions (thinking in months or a year or two) when you actually have decades ahead in this business. Start tackling marketing as soon as possible, even though it’s the thing you least want to do, because that’s what will move the needle.
