Why do art sales decline so much during tougher economic times?

During tougher economic periods, the artists who aren’t maintaining consistent marketing see their sales plummet - often by 50% or more. Here’s why: when the economy is strong and there’s lots of consumer spending, it’s easier to get away with inconsistent marketing because there’s more general buying activity. It’s like being a good stock picker during a bull market - everyone looks like a genius. But when economic conditions tighten, only the artists who are consistently marketing survive and thrive. Those who market sporadically simply disappear from people’s awareness at the exact time when buyers are being more selective. Maintaining visibility through consistent marketing becomes even more critical during challenging economic periods, not less.
