Can constraints actually help my creativity as an artist?

Yes, constraints can be incredibly powerful for creativity. Sometimes total freedom and a blank canvas is actually where ideas go to die. You need something to push against. A client’s specific request, even if it seems annoying or limiting, gives you that constraint. Stravinsky said ‘The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees oneself.’ A famous example is Dr. Seuss writing ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ on a bet that he couldn’t write a story using only 50 different words — that constraint created magic. Commissions work the same way. They’re boxes someone else builds for you, and those boxes often end up being gifts that lead you to create work you never would have made on your own.
