Why is having a wide range of prices so critical to building an art business?

There are only three ways to grow a creative business: acquire new customers, get existing customers to buy again, and increase average order value. The second way — repeat customers — is the most important, but you need existing customers first. The secret is acquiring as many new customers as possible each year (60-100+, not 6-7 sales). You do this by having a range from $0-100 that includes low-friction, impulse-buy items. It doesn’t matter what price point you acquire a customer at — 30 cents for a sticker, $3 for a card, $30 for a calendar, or $300 for art. What matters is acquiring them. Low-priced merchandise has no purchase friction (no ‘will it fit my wall?’ or ‘let me ask my spouse’). Plus, merchandise becomes advertising in your customers’ lives: a coffee mug in their kitchen, a sticker on their fridge, a photo book on their coffee table — these remind them you exist when their phone and computer are off. A healthy art business acquires many customers per year across all price points, not just a few high-ticket sales. The number of new customers acquired per year is the single most predictive metric of revenue potential.
