Why is the art industry having its disruptive moment now?

Every industry goes through disruption on its own timeline. Music went first with MP3s and independent distribution through platforms like SoundCloud. Taxi cabs were disrupted by rideshare services about ten years ago. Blockbuster was replaced by streaming nine years ago. Now it’s art and photography’s turn. The ability for artists to own their own distribution, sell direct with no middleman, keep 100% of profit, and own their entire customer database is finally having its moment. The pandemic accelerated this shift dramatically by forcing everyone online and proving that artists can successfully run their own online galleries, including live shows, from home. The opportunity to reach a larger audience while maintaining complete control is now clearly viable.
