What is merchandising and why does it matter for selling art online?

Merchandising means displaying and presenting your products so customers can clearly see and understand what they’re buying. In traditional retail, merchandising executives carefully arrange products to maximize visibility and sales. For artists selling online, merchandising means showing every aspect of your work—front, back, sides, texture, how it looks on the wall, what’s included—so customers can virtually ‘see’ the product as if they were examining it in person. This is mandatory, not optional, because the best way to sell art is in person where people can touch and see it; online merchandising recreates that experience as closely as possible.
