Why should photographers create limited editions instead of just selling unlimited prints?
Limited editions give photographers a mid-tier product between inexpensive unlimited prints and their highest-value work. Since photographers don’t have ‘originals’ like painters do, limited editions create scarcity and exclusivity that commands higher prices. The limitation makes collectors feel they own something special and rare. For example, if you use alternative processes like cyanotypes or gum printing where each print is truly unique due to hand-coating, those function like one-of-a-kind originals. Even with standard prints, creating a limited run (say, 25 of a particular size) and signing/numbering them establishes that piece as collectible and justifies premium pricing that unlimited prints cannot.
