Is the quality of my art enough to build a successful business?
No, art sales are not purely a meritocracy based on quality. It’s 50% about the quality, technical skill, and subject matter of your art, and 50% about who you are as the artist. People want to know what makes you tick, what you do on weekends, where you grew up, your background, whether you’re married, have kids, your interests outside of art. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. The famous example is Van Gogh: when his sister-in-law first tried to sell his work at a major show in Paris with all the right people, nothing sold. Only after she published his letters—which told the stories behind each painting and revealed who he was—did she have another show where everything sold. One of the greatest artists of all time couldn’t sell work without the story. The artwork alone is not enough.
