How long should I plan to be in the art business?
You should recognize that if you’re a creative person, you’re going to be creating work until you physically cannot do so anymore. This isn’t like other careers where you retire and stop—creatives routinely continue working into their 80s, 90s, and even past 100 years old. This means you have somewhere around 20, 30, 40, 50, or even 60-70 years left in this business. Understanding this long time horizon is crucial because it should inform every decision you make about your art business.
