Why is it so hard to measure which specific marketing touchpoint led to a sale?

Attribution in marketing is extremely difficult, even with modern analytics. People might start browsing on their phone, switch to a computer, use a VPN, check from their partner’s device, then finally buy from their work laptop. They often can’t even tell you themselves what prompted the purchase—they vaguely remember ‘seeing something somewhere, maybe an email or a post.’ It’s alchemy: usually a combination of many touches—a subject line, a social post, a meme, a story—working together subconsciously. Don’t expect to pinpoint one magic channel. What matters is having your message everywhere, consistently, so when someone becomes interested, they’re surrounded by your sale. The aggregate effect is what converts, not one isolated touchpoint.
