Should I spend equal time creating art and marketing it?

At minimum, plan for a 50/50 split between creating and business activities (marketing, administrative tasks, ordering supplies, etc.). Let go of the romantic notion that you’ll spend all day in a beautiful studio while someone else handles everything else. Unless you scale to support multiple employees, you are the business. Marketing isn’t a burden—it’s how you connect with people and tell stories. Accept this as part of being an artist who sells work. If you’re running a business and making sales, you’re a salesperson, and you have to sell things. Once you accept this reality, marketing becomes easier because you appreciate it as part of your creative process.
