What's the most important thing to understand about the long-term nature of an art business?
Artists and photographers never stop creating for the rest of their lives—it’s fundamentally different from other careers. This means you likely have 20, 30, 40, even 50-70 years left to get your business right. That’s not a burden; it’s an advantage. You have time to let consistent effort compound. Year after year of doing the basics—having a proper website, marketing consistently, running campaigns—will grow your business steadily. The cautionary tale is that artists in their 80s, 90s, even over 100 consistently say they wish they’d started doing this 30 years earlier. Don’t wait. Don’t waste years chasing shortcuts. The time to get serious about the business side is now, because the compounding effects of consistency are powerful, but they require time to work.
