Why do I need my own website URL instead of just using a marketplace or hosted page?
You need to own your own URL for several critical reasons. First, you need to get your name into search engines and establish your presence online—this is planting a flag in the ground for the next 30-40-50+ years you’ll be doing this. Second, search engines and AI tools value time as a quality signal, so the sooner you establish your domain, the better. Third, you need to own your customer relationships. If you sell through a gallery, they don’t tell you who bought your work. If you sell on a marketplace, you have no idea who’s buying and they don’t give you the emails. Without knowing who purchases your work, you can’t create collectors—you can’t build relationships or email them about new work. Successful, mature art businesses know who their collectors are, have a big email list, can communicate directly with buyers, and build long-term relationships. You must own your URL and your customer data—these can never be taken away from you.
