Should I do my first mural for free to get started?

Yes. Tell a business owner: ‘Here’s my canvas work. Could I do an accent wall? I don’t even want to charge you for this mural. I just want people to see it.’ You have to do at least one like that. It’s your billboard, your visibility. Once people walk by it every day, it becomes a constant advertisement for your work. That first free mural is an investment in exposure.
