What's the difference between pop-ups for e-commerce sites versus portfolio or blog sites?

For e-commerce sites where you’re selling art directly, pop-ups typically appear immediately when someone visits, often offering a discount like 10% off a first order. Visitors expect this because their intent is to potentially make a purchase—they wouldn’t be on an e-commerce site otherwise, so they’re generally receptive to the offer. For portfolio websites or blogs, exit pop-ups work better. These don’t interrupt the visitor immediately but instead appear when they’re about to leave the site, using browser technology that detects when the mouse moves toward closing the window. This approach is less intrusive because it lets visitors consume your content first before making an ask. Both types are effective; the choice depends on your site’s purpose and what feels right for your audience.
