How does the story behind the art affect whether it sells?

The story is absolutely critical. Vincent van Gogh’s sister-in-law held a major gallery show in Paris with Starry Night, the bedroom painting, the sunflowers—all the works we know today—and none of it sold. Zero. She took it all back to her flat. Then she found notes Vincent had written about where he was mentally, what he did when he created each piece, why he created it. She published these as a book, which became a bestseller. She held another show for the same art, and it all sold. Now everyone knows Van Gogh’s name. The art didn’t change—the story did. This is a powerful lesson: the story matters enormously. Art sales are not a pure meritocracy based only on quality. They’re about 50% the quality of the work and 50% what people know about you as the artist—your story, your journey, your why.
